Discover the marine ecosystem of Antarctica. Take this opportunity to learn more interesting yet fascinating facts about the marine ecosystem in the coldest place on earth!
Location : Antarctica
The Antarctic ecosystem is located in Antarctica. Antarctica is a Greek word that means 'opposite of the north'. It is the 5th largest continent in the world and is also the coldest, driest, most windiest location on earth. Antarctica is located in the south (bottom) of the earth. Approximately 90% of the world's ice is in Antarctica. The size of Antarctica changes though, depending on the ice which makes its size inaccurate. There are only 2 seasons in Antarctica which is winter and summer. In winter, the ice increases which also increases its size. When ice melts, it decreases its size. Winter and summer are very different compared to other continents. Whenever it is winter time in Antarctica, it is dark for 6 months. In summer time, there is daylight for 6 months. This happens because during winter time, Antarctica is tilted away from the sun which means that sunshine does not reach Antarctica. During summer time, Antarctica faces the sun because of the earths rotation.
